Soul Water’s founder Menno Frits Koopmans believes that as humans, everything we do has significance. From what we say and do, to the choices we make and the the way we behave towards others — it all adds up. That’s why when he launched Soul Water he was committed to taking responsibility for the impact the business would have on the environment. Embarking on a journey through the world of packaging materials, he discovered that aluminium was the hands-down winner for reducing that imprint. Here’s a little glimpse into why aluminium cans beat beverage cartons every time:
Aluminium cans
– 75% of all aluminium ever produced is still in use today
– Have the highest recycling rate of any material
– Are eternally recyclable, meaning they can be reused over and over again, indefinitely
– Are equally recyclable, regardless of design, colour or format
– recycling aluminium is 95% less energy-costly than its primary production.
Beverage cartons
– Are almost impossible to recycle because they’re composed of three different material types and thermo-glued together
– 21% of a beverage carton is made from plastic (PET), contributing to microplastic pollution
– The average reprocessing rate of cartons was only 51% across Europe in 2020
– 78.6% is burnt for energy or ends up in landfill in Spain
– At best, cartons are only down-cycled, and mostly turned into materials for the construction industry (PolyAl).
